Sandusky’s Body Language During and After Verdict Shows Shock and Fear
The glassy eyed look you see in this photo of Jerry Sandusky shows his autonomic nervous system at work . It shows that he is experiencing shock at the reality of what lies ahead of him for the rest of his life- a prison cell.
When the verdict was read he apparently had no emotional reaction. This confirms that he was beginning to show signs of shock. While he may have been mentally prepared that he might not be acquitted of the charges, it was a very different story for him emotionally. When reality set in, he became numb.
You can begin to see the change in his skin color in his mug shot . The deeper furrows in his brow and forehead reflect his fear as does his clenched jaw. It is interesting to note that Sandusky is wearing his white dress shirt under his jailhouse yellows. Perhaps he was experiencing feeling cold and even shivering. Perhaps that is why they may have allowed him to keep his shirt under his yellows.
He may also be under a suicide watch as the reality of his fate sinks in. Thus, they may remove all of his clothing and put him into an anti-suicide smock type garment where he will not be able to use his clothing to hang himself. There is no doubt that Sandusky will be placed in isolation so that others won’t harm him. This may perhaps be the most devastating and painful punishment for a man who was so active and revered by others.
The fact that he spoke out during interviews and essentially admitted his guilt that he showered with young boys and tickled them was no doubt a cry out that he subconsciously wanted to be caught. When he hesitated during his interview with Bob Costas as he was asked if he liked young boys, he essentially sealed his fate. He hemmed and hawed and chucked. This spoke volumes.
Most attorneys would never allow their client to speak publicly before a trial. Perhaps his attorney advised him to be silent but Sandusky’s need to reveal himself was much stronger than his need to heed his attorney’s advice. Sandusky was planning to speak out during the trial as well as it was planned that he would take the stand. I am sure that this was his desire and not his attorney’s desire.
After hearing the detailed accounts of what he allegedly did to those young men, what more could be said on his part? Nothing! I have no doubt that his attorney was finally able to convince him to be quiet and say nothing. It was also fascinating to hear a attorney Joe Amandola say that he would ” die of a heart attack ” if his client was acquitted on all counts. That statement certainly showed that he did not have much faith in his client.
At the presser it was also interesting how Amandola lavished praised on the jury and said how they made the right decision. It was as though he was distancing himself from Sandusky as not to be hated and vilified and painted with the same brush. He was heckled by the crowd as he spoke so he tried to stay away from defending his client any further.
It was also interesting that Sandusky’s son Matt decided to jump ship at the final hour as he admitted being abused by Sandusky. Initially he was on his father’s side. But what made him suddenly change? Perhaps it was hearing all of the detailed emotional testimony of the other young men that jarred him into reality and allowed him to get out of his denial. In doing the right thing and speaking up for the first time in his life, he may have begun his own lengthy healing process.
Perhaps he will be asked to write a book about his experience with his dad which may also add to his healing as well as his financial gain as a form of compensation for all that he has allegedly suffered at the hands of his father.
Dottie Sandusky is still in denial. On the stand she said she never heard andy screams. Oftentimes it is the wife who is the last to know that their husband is not who they think he is. In Sandusky’s case, he is a pedophile who is sexually attracted to young boys. I hope that Dottie gets some counseling to help her get out of her denial and realize she has been living with a sexual predator all of these years.I pray that she will not stand by this Toxic Man.
There is a huge lesson in the Sandusky saga. The lesson is that we can’t turn a blind eye when there is wrongdoing -no matter who that person is. There is no doubt that many people knew that Sandusky had a penchant for young boys. But they were not willing to do step up or do anything about it because he was a winning coach and a pillar of the community. This former pillar of the community destroyed many lives and now will have to be held accountable as well as those who once turned a blind eye.
